A “Roda de Samba” is a jam session with singers and players gathered around in a circle (roda), performing samba songs.
Samba songs — and a lot of them! — performed by a group of friends gathered to celebrate music and friendship. We sing and play as if we were in our backyard!
The line above likely best captures the spirit and the energy one can feel in this roda, which was officially kicked off at the backyard of one of its members, and today is a regular feature at major samba venues in São Paulo.
A vast range of instruments, including guitar, cavaquinho, mandolin, transverse flute, tambourine, bass drum, tamborim and cuíca allows Roda de Samba dos Amigos to play across many samba styles. The Roda’s rich and diverse repertoire features a number of acclaimed artists, such as Nélson Cavaquinho, Cartola, Elton Medeiros, Dona Ivone Lara, Germano Matias, Paulinho da Viola, Bide, Marçal, Batatinha, Eduardo Gudin, Chico Buarque, Candeia, Adoniran Barbosa, Noel Rosa, Geraldo Filme, Paulo César Pinheiro, Roberto Ribeiro, Baden Powell, João Nogueira, Velha Guarda da Portela and Carlinhos Vergueiro. Additionally, we also perform music by up-and-coming young samba songwriters, including members of the Roda.
The meetings are marked by a festive, easygoing atmosphere, in which attendants are engaged to participate, as if in a celebration of music, friendship, samba, happiness and love. It is a big party — but one which holds on to the care and rigor that live samba performance calls for.
